Ketogenic Diet Can Help Improve Autoimmune Diseases: Studies

The benefits of a  ketogenic diet  may extend far beyond weight loss. It may also benefit those with autoimmune disorders. What is a ketogenic diet? Keto basics The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low carb diets. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis . When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain ( Source ). Changes in Gut Bacteria May Cause Parkinson’s: Study

Image
We are all familiar with the sensation of “butterflies” in our stomachs when we feel nervous or frightened. But have you ever considered that this feeling could potentially influence changes in your gut that may contribute to the development of a neurodegenerative disease? A  2023 study  reveals a potential connection between Parkinson’s disease and gut microbiome, suggesting that infection with a specific bacteria,  known as Desulfovibrio , may contribute to the development of the condition. Researchers at the University of Helsinki observed that the presence of these bacterial strains in Parkinson’s patients could lead to the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a protein closely associated with the disease. To further investigate this association in humans, the researchers analyzed stool samples from 10 Parkinson’s patients and 10 healthy individuals. The findings showed that all Parkinson’s patients had Desulfovibrio bacteria in their gut microbiome, further establish...

Fitness Strategies That Are Creating World-Class Champions

Dr Mercola - In the video below, I interview Sam Calavitta, aka Coach Cal, founder of   The Treigning Lab . We met through a biohacking conference in the fall of 2022. One of the organizers of the event introduced me to Miesha Tate, a professional and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC Women's Bantamweight champion) and mixed martial artist who in turn introduced me to Coach Cal. He’s taken much of the health science I've been teaching over the years and put it together into a revolutionary training program that is producing extraordinary results. Here, we’ll review some of the strategies that can take your fitness to the next level. Coach Cal’s Unique Approach Gets Results Calavitta himself wrestled until he turned 40, at which point he switched to Ironman competitions, which is an entirely different paradigm in terms of energy expenditure.  “So, I had to figure out my energy systems,” Calavitta says.  “I used a lot of the things that you ...

Training Strategies for Endurance and Maximum Longevity

In the video below, Siim Land, author of “Metabolic Autophagy: Practice Intermittent Fasting and Resistance Training to Build Muscle and Promote Longevity,” 1   reviews the findings of a new systematic review published in the March-April 2023 issue of Missouri Medicine. The paper, titled “Training Strategies to Optimize Cardiovascular Durability and Life Expectancy,” 2  reviewed studies published between 2011 and 2022 that assessed the effects of duration and intensity of exercise, and specific types of training or sports on long-term cardiovascular health and life expectancy. Not surprisingly, a sedentary lifestyle was associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular problems and shorter lifespans, and physical activity was associated with improved health and longer life. What was somewhat surprising was the type of physical activity that garnered the best results. The authors concluded that high amounts of strenuous exercise were now...
