Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) vs Chlorhexidine: What's the Difference?

Image
There are a large number of mouth rinse products available to the general public. Many have not been thoroughly evaluated and relatively few comparisons of products have been made.  In this article, we would like to cover 2 popular mouths rinse products i.e.  cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and chlorhexidine. What is Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC)? Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is obtained by quaternization of pyridine with cetyl chloride. CPC functions by penetrating the cell membrane. This causes cell components to leak, which eventually leads to cell death. It is a well-known antimicrobial agent used in mouthwash to promote gingival health. It has also been used as an antiseptic when treating infections in the mouth and throat. Cetylpyridinium Chloride Dangers Cetylpyridinium chloride in mouthwash has been misattributed as a cause of oral cancer in the past, but research has not shown it to link to any form ...

7 Best Cetylpyridinium Chloride Mouthwash Brands 2025

A meta-analysis of 3 studies (C19early 2025) concluded that CPC (CetylPyridinium Chloride) may significantly lower risk with  viral clearance . One study shows significant benefit. Meta analysis using the most serious outcome reported shows 83% [6‑97%] lower risk . Results are consistent with early treatment being more effective than late treatment. A study, published in Nature ( Takeda 2022 ) concluded that CPC (CetylPyridinium Chloride) may inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection even at lower concentrations. Another team of international scientists has also demonstrated the usefulness of cetylpyridinium chloride-containing mouthwashes in inhibiting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and reducing the risk of viral transmission. The study is published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology (2022). A scientific review, published in the  Journal of Formosan Medical Association  (2022) also concluded that mouthwash containing CPC shows potential fo...

Is It Wise to Get Your Wisdom Teeth Pulled?

Image
Oral health experts typically recommend extracting wisdom teeth if they’re growing in at an odd angle, causing pain, are affected by tooth decay, or if they’re impacting other teeth or causing inflammation. The preemptive extraction of wisdom teeth before they become problematic has been a routine practice for decades. Surgical tooth removal began after the introduction of the local anesthetic Novocaine in 1902. Before that, these third molars were rarely, if ever, removed as a preventive measure due to the pain involved (1). The removal of wisdom teeth started becoming more common after the 1950s with the advent of antibiotics to treat related infections. (2). Many parents, however, opt to have their teenagers’ wisdom teeth removed even when there’s no sign of trouble. Estimates suggest 5 million people have their wisdom teeth removed each year, and more than half may be completely unnecessary. 3 According to a 2005 Cochrane Review, 4  "Prudent decision-making, wit...

Dangers of Root Canals and How to Treat Them

Image
In this interview (below), Dr. Val Kanter, a board-certified endodontist and biological dentist with a practice in Beverly Hills, California, discusses the oft-ignored dangers of root canal procedures and modern technologies with which these issues can be effectively addressed and corrected. Unfortunately, few regular dentists fully appreciate the intimate links between your oral health and overall physical health and, as a result, some of their interventions can actually cause catastrophic health challenges. The sad reality is that if we knew how to eat properly from the time we were born, the need for just about any type of dentistry would, in my view, decrease by at least 90%, because we just wouldn't develop cavities. Thankfully we have trained professionals who can help restore our health, and Kanter is one of them. Her transition into holistic dentistry occurred after she moved from Florida to California and started doing some self-exploration.  "I had some enlighteni...
