Here's What You Need To Know About The Allergan Breast Implant Recall

Image
In the wake of Allergan issuing a global recall of its BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders, The AEDITION breaks down what it means for patient safety. At this point, you've likely heard that Allergan (the Dublin-based drugmaker behind BOTOX®, JUVÉDERM®, CoolSculpting®, LATISSE®, and more) issued a worldwide recall of its BIOCELL® saline- and silicone-filled textured breast implants and tissue expanders. The decision followed a request from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove the products from the market due to a link between them and a rare type of cancer known as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (a.k.a. BIA-ALCL). The Backstory The debate about textured implants is nothing new. Amidst a growing concern about potential health risks (they were pulled from European markets in December 2018, with Canada and Australia following suit in May and July, respectively), the FDA determined in March 2019 that ther...

French PIP breast implant scandal: an ongoing global health scandal

Image
(FRANCE 24) - It’s been eight years since the French authorities first drew attention to a French company selling faulty, and potentially dangerous, breast implants. The implants, manufactured by French company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP), were made with cheap, unapproved silicone designed for use in mattresses. Hundreds of thousands of women all over the world were affected – and all are still waiting for compensation. In 2010, the French medicine and healthcare watchdog Afssaps withdrew the PIP implants from the market, after surgeons reported a higher-than-usual rate of rupture. The same day, Poly Implant Prothèse was placed into compulsory liquidation. What followed was a drawn-out health scandal that took years to skewer those responsible. Jean-Claude Mas, the founder of PIP was only condemned for fraud six years later. He launched an appeal, which was eventually rejected by France’s highest court in September this year, and he will be serving a sentence of four years in jail a...

(Coconuts Media) - A 2000s-era Thai pop star is back in the spotlight after this weekend speaking publicly about her “near death story” following a breast augmentation surgery in South Korea that went terribly wrong. Photo: Facebook/ May Jeeranan In viral Facebook posts made on Friday, Jeeranan “May” Kitprasarn, a singer formerly signed with record label RS, said she decided to go under the knife — for the first time in her life — in late December to get breast implants. The surgery, she says, ended up putting her in a coma where she had a “10 percent chance of survival.” Jeeranan said that, in an attempt to improve her posture (*ahem*) and confidence, she paid a whopping THB800,000 (US$24,000) to have the surgery at Grand Plastic Surgery hospital in Seoul, which she said had many positive reviews. But soon after the operation, Jeeranan said her breasts had caused irregular bleeding and burning sensations, something she claims her doctor and nurses said was perfectly normal. “I...
