Prostate Cancer Treatment Can Wait for Most Men, Study Finds

Image
Researchers have found long-term evidence that actively monitoring localized prostate cancer is a safe alternative to immediate surgery or radiation. The results, released Saturday, are encouraging for men who want to avoid treatment-related sexual and incontinence problems, said Dr. Stacy Loeb, a prostate cancer specialist at NYU Langone Health who was not involved in the research. The study directly compared the three approaches—surgery to remove tumors, radiation treatment, and monitoring. Most prostate cancer grows slowly, so it takes many years to look at the disease’s outcomes. “There was no difference in prostate cancer mortality at 15 years between the groups,” Loeb said. And prostate cancer survival for all three groups was high—97 percent regardless of treatment approach. “That’s also very good news.” The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at a European Association of Urology conference in Milan, Italy. Britain’s National Institute fo...

There are no known drug interactions with saw palmetto, and reported side effects are minor and rare. The active part of the pl...

Every cancer diagnosis comes with a range of reactions, including the natural inclination to act as quickly as possible to choose and begin treatment. However, a  new study  has revealed that, in the case of prostate cancer, over 15 years, outcomes were surprisingly similar for three groups: a prostatectomy group, a radiotherapy group, and a nontreatment group under active monitoring. The study’s authors found that prostate cancer-specific mortality was relatively low regardless of the approach taken. The Clinical Trial The new findings are based on 15-year outcomes of the Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment (ProtecT) clinical trial sponsored by the University of Oxford. This long-term trial was initiated in 2001 and will  continue until 2027 . Here’s a summary of the trial thus far: The ProtecT trial included 82,429 men in the United Kingdom between 50 and 69 years of age who received a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test from 1999 to 2009. Localized prostate canc...
