Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine and Zinc for COVID-19: What are the Differences?

Image
Ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine and zinc have received various media and social media attention for the past few months. 'No high quality evidence', "can only be used in a clinical trial setting', 'double blinded randomised controlled clinical trial needed', "insufficient data to recommend either for or against the use" are some of the medical and scientific technicalities that you might read in various social media channels. Confused?  The number of options for the treatment of COVID-19 has increased drastically in recent months, thus making it complicated when it comes to choosing the right combination. In general, there are 3 broad categories of medical interventions: Prevention or Prophylaxis e.g. vaccine Early out-patient treatment Hospital treatment         Image credit: Cleveland Clinic All these treatments come with various technical jargons, thus could be overwhelming and confusing for you as a consumer. Proven Benefits of Quercetin, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Image
Have you ever wondered what what top superfoods like red wine, green tea, kale, and blueberries all have in common? The answer is quercetin, a natural compound tied to longevity, heart health, endurance, immunity, and more. What Is Quercetin? Quercetin is an antioxidant that belongs to a class of water-soluble plant substances called flavonoids , which are present in certain fruits and vegetables.  While the best way to get quercetin is through your diet, it also is available in supplement form, as pills or capsules. Sometimes, quercetin in supplement form is packaged with bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples, because both have anti-inflammatory properties (Quercetin & Bromelain for inflammation). Most dietary supplements contain a chemical compound, aglycone, which is the free form of quercetin. There are foods high in quercetin that you can add to your diet. Arguably, red onions are some of the most potent sources of quercetin;  one study  found that absorption ...

Quercetin and Zinc Ionophore Activity: Studies and Review 2021

Image
Zinc is a mineral element needed to regulate adaptive immune cells' functions. Higher level of intracellular zinc showed to increase intracellular pH; which affect on RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and decrease replication mechanism of RNA viruses. Therefore, drugs that described as zinc ionophores could be used with zinc supplement to act as antiviral against many RNA viruses including SARS-CoV-2. Quercetin is natural compound act as zinc ionophore to cause zinc influx intracellular. Quercetin is a safe natural anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory polyphenolic compound that found in various natural sources include onion, red grapes, honey and citrus fruits. It was shown that quercetin has the ability to chelate zinc ions and act as zinc ionophore. Therefore, quercetin could have antiviral activity against many RNA viruses . Quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, has unique biological properties that may improve mental/physical performance and reduce infection risk.  As...
