Xlear Xylitol Nasal Spray Reviews 2022

Xlear

Xlear is a natural saline spray containing xylitol—an ingredient which cleanses and moisturizes. Normal saline nasal sprays can dry out the nasal passage, actually leaving it more irritated and susceptible to external contaminants.

Xylitol also has cleansing benefits; it almost acts like soap for your nose. The industry-leading formula alleviates congestion and also prevents bacteria and other pollutants from sticking to nasal tissues.

Does Xlear help with sinus infection?

Yes, with the addition of xylitol, Xlear Saline Nasal Spray with xylitol will moisturize and soothe your sinus and nasal passages.

About Xlear Inc.

Since it was formed in 2000, Xlear Inc. (pronounced “clear”) has been recognized as the leading manufacturer of xylitol-based products in North America.

Xlear Nasal Spray Reviews

Dental hygienist Tim Ives says: “Since dental clinics are safe to attend and remain open during this lockdown, we’re seeing more and more dental professionals using additional protection against the COVID-19 virus – not only for themselves, but for their staff and patients too.

“I know many dental professionals who use the xylitol-based Xlear Nasal Spray regularly, twice a day, before and after practice because they feel it provides extra protection, in addition to the standard PPE they wear and other cross infection strategies they have in place.

“Xlear Nasal Spray contains an ingredient which is familiar to dental professionals – xylitol – which is known for its anti-bacterial qualities and is often used in many dental products including sugar free gum and toothpastes.”

He continues: “A number of recent US-based laboratory trials demonstrate the efficacy of xylitol for killing the COVID-19 virus, which is why dental professionals opt for Xlear Nasal Spray due to xylitol’s capacity to kill bacteria and viruses.”

I have had chronic sinus infections for years to the point of having lost 90% of my ability to smell anything, including skunk. I have been on multiple rounds of antibiotics, steroids for inflammation, used mucus relief medications, allergy relief nasal sprays, saline nasal sprays, you name it I’ve tried it. About 3 months ago I had yet another sinus infection that I was trying to self treat with using everything listed above except for the steroids/antibiotics without success.

As a last ditch effort before going on steroids/antibiotics yet again, I went to the local health store and the guy there recommended this stuff. I initially used it every 3-4 hours and within a week my sinuses felt better than they had in years! I have continued to use it about 3 x a day now and my sense of smell has actually returned! I am nurse and am around sick people on almost a daily basis and during the winter months was sick a lot! (Yes I got my flu shot) This winter in spite of having been around lots of sick people I have remained healthy. If I feel a sniffle coming on I increses my usage of this stuff and it never developes into anything. So if you have Sinus problems give this stuff a try it has really been a life changer for me.

I have some kind of weird Rhinitis, I've tried Everything! I mean Everything! There are some good creams out there that will tackle an infection. That's it! Don't bother with saltwater/saline washes etc etc, I've flushed and rinsed & stuck creams up my nose for many years.

This Xylitol stuff, is really very good, it worked for me straight away and so far the only side effect is slight sugary taste after you use it, and no or very little Rhinitis - Meaning I can breathe, don't have pain or discomfort, very few sores and scabs, even in the morning very little green/bloody mucus, my nose is 'almost' normal.

Been using this now most days for a while, still very effective, but occasionally, maybe once every 2 weeks I still have to use some nasal cream. One other thing I found to help a lot with inflammation is Turmeric supplements.

I get bad hayfever and other allergies. I hate taking antihistamines as they knock me out so I prefer to use eye wash and nasal sprays. I've tried to use saline spray in the past but I always have a really hard time with it and end up feeling much worse.

This xylitol spray works so much better for me. I think the price is a bit on the high side but given that it's the only thing that works for me I'll keep buying it.

Xlear also do a sachet version but, although it works, it's such a faff because you have to use boiled water and if you want fast relief it takes too long. So I decided to just pay a bit more and get the spray and is much easier so I'll probably just get this from now on.

After 60 years of not being able to breathe clearly from my left nostril, it is such a blessing to have discovered Xlear.

Trips to doctors, diagnostic light fibers guided up my sinus passages, antibiotics, steroids, sprays, rinses, anti-inflamatories. have been tried, all to no avail.

The very first use of Xlear I could tell there was hope. The second use I could breathe!

The real test was to attempt to sleep since lying down insured me that left nasal passage would swell and nothing, but nothing, would clear them.

If I can’t breathe, I can’t sleep. So many nites were spent sitting up and dozing, Sure enough with Xlear, I can breath all nite long.

Beyond breathing, the biggest benefit is no pills are needed, and the steroid and decongestant nose sprays tha jack your blood pressure can go in the trash.

I can’t wait to go to bed again tonite and not need my regalia of sprays, potions, and pills ...just my bottle of Xlear to get a great nites sleep.

My wife suffered from daily headaches due to sinus pressure, Dr's put her on steroids and flonase, To make a long story short, a little research, Xlear followed by steam inhaler with essential oils and after years of trouble she has not had a problem since, not a headache since the first treatment. EXCELLENT product !

I am so thankful for this product! I have an autoimmune disease and therefore have constant allergies and sinus issues. My children also struggle with seasonal allergies. OTC allergy meds don't seem to help us at all, but this stuff is a game changer! I notice an immediate difference when we use it. PLUS, it has taken care of multiple sinus infections for me when nothing else would! I literally order this every month.

Xlear Xylitol Nasal Spray Active Ingredients

Xlear’s xylitol nasal spray recipe only contains four simple ingredients i.e. Purified Water, Xylitol, Saline, Grapefruit Seed Extract.

We’re going to dive in into their xylitol nasal spray recipe for you.

Purified Water

You hear a lot of talk about purified water, but what does “purified” actually mean? Purified water can come from any source because it goes through the purification process. The purification process removes any chemicals or contaminants that may be in the water. It can be purified several ways including distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, and carbon filtration.

Xylitol

So what is xylitol? Xylitol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate that looks and tastes just like table sugar. It is widely found in nature, mostly in fruits and vegetables, but is also produced in small amounts by the human body. So why did Xlear put a sweetener in their nasal spray recipe?

Xlear Inc. actually began when they licensed the nasal spay and the name from the Texas physician and his wife who put the combination together to prevent their grand daughter’s recurring ear infections. They tell their story and why preventing ear infections is much better than treating them here. The spray worked so well his step son suggested they patent it. Then he went to the FDA.

I have a really neat way to wash the nose,” he told them. “We don’t have a category for nose washing, they replied, “What does that do?” He told them, “If your nose is clean you don’t get ear and sinus infections, and allergies and asthma are better.” “Then it’s a drug,” they said. So he went to the pharmaceutical industry. Initial interest there evaporated when they found out that xylitol was a natural product and widely available. If this industry cannot control a product and make the profits needed to get passed by the FDA there is no interest. So they began selling their nose wash through local health food stores. Nathan Jones contacted them and persuaded them that he could market it better than they could. That’s how Xlear in Utah got started.

Research has shown that xylitol makes it harder for infectious germs to hold on in the nose and if they cannot hold on they are easily washed out and are not there to cause infections. Research has also shown that our noses need an adequate amount of water in the air we breathe in order for our defenses there to work properly.

Xylitol pulls small amounts of water into the nose, which works to optimize our own nasal defenses. If the defense of your favorite football team is optimal the other team will not score; that seems to be what xylitol does when it’s sprayed regularly into the nose. Since xylitol reduces the germs, pollutants and irritants from holding on in the nose and enhances our own washing defenses regular use of a xylitol nasal spray results in fewer respiratory infections and easier breathing to name some of the xylitol health benefits.

In a nutshell, xylitol helps cleanse and moisturize the nasal passageway, the “drug” benefits are secondary to the cleaning.

Saline

First, what is saline? A lot of people are aware of it, but for those who aren’t, let us explain. Saline is plain and simply salt water. So why is saline an excellent addition to a xylitol nasal spray recipe?

Saline solution is salt water that contains 0.9 percent salt. It has a similar salt and water composition as a person's blood and tears. Saline solutions can help restore moisture to the nasal passages and sinuses. It can also help with inflammation and thinning the mucus.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Xlear’s xylitol nasal spray recipe includes grapefruit seed extract (GSE) as a natural preservative. GSE is derived from the seeds, membranes, and the pulp of the grapefruit. It is often used as a purifier, antiseptic, and preservative.

That’s it! That’s everything in Xlear’s xylitol nasal spray recipe. Because their nasal spray doesn’t contain any steroids or other anti-inflammation products, you will never have to worry about rebound congestion using Xlear Nasal Spray. Xlear recommends using their product daily, in the morning and evening. However, you can use it whenever you’re feeling a little stuffed up due to a cold or flu or simply allergies.

Note: Do not get confused between Xlear Nasal Spray (with Xylitol) and Xlear Nasal Decongestant. Xlear nasal decongestant is a different product and contains oxymetazoline instead.

Study Concludes Xlear Kills SARS-CoV-2 and Effective Against New Variants

An in-vitro study done collaboratively by Utah State University and Northwestern University finds Xlear components (grapefruit seed extract and xylitol) significantly eliminates SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The imaging research study component was performed at the BioCryo facility of Northwestern University’s NUANCE Center.

Using electron microscopy, we have visual evidence showing that xylitol and grapefruit seed extract (GSE) counters the virus. The GSE kills the virus, while the xylitol prevents the virus from attaching to the cell walls. The study tested SARS-CoV-2 virus titers and LRV against a single concentration of Xlear nasal spray. According to the Study, “After a 25-minute contact time, the nasal spray reduced virus from 4.2 to 1.7 log10 CCID50 per 0.1 mL, a statistically significant reduction (P<0.001) of 2.5 log10 CCID50.” The Northwestern/Utah State Study is the newest in a string of studies to reach the conclusion that Xlear is effective against the SARS-CoV-2.

However, the study breaks new ground in two vital respects: “First, we conclude, in addition to countering SARS-CoV-2, Xlear is likely effective in preventing the spread of future H1N1 viruses, including the emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants, along with other viral epidemics. Given the more transmissible variants we now face, this is critical now,” said Professor Mark Cannon, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. “Second, using electron microscopy, we have visual evidence showing that xylitol and GSE counters the virus. The GSE kills the virus, while the xylitol prevents the virus from attaching to the cell walls. The image (attached) shows SARS-CoV-2 viruses outside the cell and never attached, thereby preventing infection,” added Dr. Cannon. The study postulates that xylitol acts as a decoy target for SARS-CoV-2, preventing virus attachment to the core protein on the cell wall.

The collaborative study concludes: “Because there are no risk factors in using the X/GSE combination therapy, and [Xlear] nasal spray is over the counter available without prescription, and [Xlear] allows for comfortable long term mask wearing, adoption of this preventive anti-viral therapy should be encouraged.

May 2021: Xlear CEO explains Xlear Nasal Spray’s lasting role against COVID-19

According to Nathan Jones, CEO of Xlear:

With all of the research supporting Xlear, we have applied for an “emergency use authorization” with the FDA. We have five in vitro studies showing how our nasal spray affects the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we have a good understanding of the method of action of how the xylitol blocks adhesion, we have small in-human trials of COVD-19 patients showing great results and we have two larger trials underway right now.

March 2021: Xlear Submits COVID-19 Pre-Emergency Use Authorization Request with FDA Regarding Use of Xlear Nasal Spray in Help in Combating SARS-CoV-2

Xlear has filed a Pre-Emergency Use Authorization (Pre-EUA) Request with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval to make claims that the nasal spray is approved for use in preventing SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) transmission and infection (BusinessWire). The Pre-EUA is a first step in seeking formal authorization of Xlear Nasal Spray as tool to help in combatting COVID-19.

Xlear previously filed a pre-EUA seeking approval for use of the nasal spray as a medical device in combatting COVID-19. However, because the FDA determined that Xlear “works against the virus,” the FDA told Xlear it would need to be considered as a drug or combination product EUA.

Seeing that the FDA says Xlear works against the virus, we have decided to seek EUA approval as a drug,” said Nathan Jones, Xlear’s CEO.

Xlear’s Pre-EUA Request is based on recent studies showing the nasal spray is:
  • virucidal (it kills the virus);
  • antiviral (it blocks the adhesion of the virus to the nasal membrane, which is how most people get sick from COVID-19);
  • antibacterial against streptococcus bacteria, which is the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia (a COVID-19 complication linked to morbidity); and,
  • Reduces both the duration and severity of illness when used to treat COVID-19 patients.
Xlear is currently sold in over 50,000 pharmacies, grocery stores, and online as a nasal spray. “Xlear doesn’t require the EUA to be sold and used—we only need an EUA to be able to inform people about the benefits of using Xlear to protect themselves from COVID-19. It’s insane. Without the EUA, the Federal Trade Commission won’t let us simply inform people about new, published, independent scientific studies,” Jones added.

We hope to move forward quickly with FDA to address gaps in current prevention and treatment strategies against SARS-CoV-2. People should be using Xlear as part of a layered defense to prevent getting COVID-19. If everyone used Xlear, in addition to taking other steps recommended by public health officials, we believe we could help the nation defeat COVID-19 faster,” Jones added.
