Supplements for Erectile Dysfunction 2024

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is defined by difficulty getting and keeping an erection. It's been reported that more than half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience some form of ED. ED is often a symptom of another health problem.

1. What Causes Erectile Dysfunction

a.Vascular - The narrowing of the arteries (called atherosclerosis) is one of the most common causes of ED. ED also stems from poor blood flow which can be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking.

b. Neurological - Nerve damage from diabetes and surgeries

c. Endocrine - Hormonal issues like low testosterone. Drugs, alcohol and certain medications can also cause ED.

d. Psychological - Stress, depression

2. How to Treat Erectile Dysfunction

  • Quit smoking & drinking
  • Lose weight and reduce cholesterol
  • Increase physical activity
  • Oral medications
  • Sex therapy
  • Penile injections
  • Vacuum devices
  • Intraurethral medication

3. Supplements for Erectile Dysfunction

a. Maca

A vegetable root from Peru but not much scientific evidence as to helping ED

b. Panax Ginseng

Some studies shows it helps in the treatment of ED.

c. Yohimbine

West African tree bark believed to release Nitrous Oxide and dilates the arteries to the penis.

Studies on the effects of yohimbine have mixed results. One meta-analysis study found that yohimbine was effective for ED only when combined with other treatments.

A combination of yohimbine and L-arginine is shown to significantly improve erectile function in people with ED.

d. L-arginine

An amino acid, which is a building block of protein. It is a vasodilator, meaning that it can help open up the blood vessels. In theory, this could increase blood flow to the penis and help produce an erection.

A study from reported that many people with ED had low L-arginine levels, which suggests the two may be linked.

However, scientific studies have not proven that taking L-arginine supplements can treat ED.

e. Tongkat Ali

Some smaller pre-clinical studies have found Tongkat Ali's herbal extracts to improve sexual health and have positive benefits for erectile dysfunction.

The compounds in Tongkat Ali could act as a testosterone booster for low testosterone and help treat these issues, according to some clinical studies.

f. Horny Goat Weed

Some men take horny goat weed in the belief that it's a natural alternative to drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED). Although still preliminary, there's new evidence to support the idea.

Epimedium, the suspected active component of horny goat weed, appears to increase blood flow and improve sexual function, or act as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, similar to some drugs used for ED. Horny goat weed also contains phytoestrogens, chemicals that act somewhat like the hormone oestrogen.
